Pastor Willy Rice Eyes SBC Presidential Role
Faith Facts
- Pastor Willy Rice has announced his intent to be nominated for Southern Baptist Convention president.
- Rice has emphasized the need for spiritual renewal and correction within the SBC.
- The SBC’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission has faced internal debate about its direction and funding.
Pastor Willy Rice of Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater, Florida, has shared his desire to be nominated as the next president of the Southern Baptist Convention. He reflected on the Protestant Reformation and called for a season of renewal, correction, and faithfulness in the denomination.
Rice, a pastor of over four decades, expressed concerns within the SBC, urging for humble correction and prayerful renewal rooted in Christian values and Scripture.
“The Church is always reforming,” Rice said.
At this year’s SBC annual meeting, Rice introduced a motion to abolish the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission over concerns about outside influence and lack of spiritual accountability.
“My head has to admit what my heart didn’t want to believe. Facts are stubborn things, and the evidence is clear and the trust is broken.”
Although the motion did not pass, the discussion highlighted a strong commitment among Southern Baptists to remain aligned with biblical principles and protect the integrity of their ministries.
Other voices, such as Pastor Steve Willis, have defended the ERLC for its pro-life advocacy and support for families.
As the SBC prepares for new leadership at its annual meeting in Orlando next June, Christians are called to seek wisdom, unity, and faithfulness to God’s Word in guiding future decisions.
